What the manufacturer/car service (for example "OnStar") tells you regarding GPS as being 'off' is perhaps entirely different from what actually is happening. If it's controlled with software, it can be manipulated, for good or evil.

Another tactic to track you is RFID chips embedded tires from Roadside Monitors

Any device, whether connected to the internet or not, won't be able to receive or send data whilst the machine is completely turned off (unless you suspect that its not completely off, and that the hardware keeps a small process running in the background).

Ask your manufacturer.

Yes, it's just a charger. I have 3 of the same chargers, for my car, for the outlet, and usb. Yay for universal usb camera and phone cables.

For brief outings it works perfect. Has several hours of a battery life. But you still want to charge it frequently. charging it with 3/4 battery life 100 times is less strain on the battery then charging it 20 times from a dead battery.

Buy a Garmin, they make navigational tools as a business rather than just being someone who has decided to make them to jump on the band wagon such as say Sony....they might make good TVs but sat navs are a different kettle of fish entirely.

Garmin use their own map base rather than relying on someone Else's.

I've used their mountaineering GPS for years without a problem before the car mounted version became popular.

Whilst no GPS system is foolproof Garmin are about as good as they get.

Consider the Magellan CrossoverGPS which was rated the #1 outdoor gear recently, this unit will allow you to use it on your horse back rides and keep track of way points and base camps and so on. The best part about the Magellan CrossoverGPS is that when you decide to transport your horse or drive your vehicles, you can use the navigation as a vehicle navigation that will offer you turn by turn navigation and pronounce street names etc. This unit is also IPX4 rated so is water resistant. You can even use this unit on a boat to keep track of your best fishing holes locations.
Auto Nav 2000 Plus, Inc have these available for $199.99 which is right in your price range.

For under $200 definitely go with the Garmin HCx. You'll be wondering where you DON'T get a signal. Garmin are the best navigational systems in my opinion, and this handheld one is great for going over the mountain and through the woods, to grandmother's house you'll go!
:P

You can check out other customer's reviews too!
