Could GPS Navigation systems give away your location even when turned off?

I know they have the problem about apple products giving the company your location and traveling trails for advertising. But I’m more interested in the navigation systems in cars.

Could portable (or not) car GPS systems tell companies or even other people (like a spouse or a parent for those sneaky individuals) even if they aren’t used, just in the car??

  1. Tom Bruce-Clayton says:

Any device, whether connected to the internet or not, won’t be able to receive or send data whilst the machine is completely turned off (unless you suspect that its not completely off, and that the hardware keeps a small process running in the background).

    Ask your manufacturer.

What the manufacturer/car service (for example "OnStar") tells you regarding GPS as being ‘off’ is perhaps entirely different from what actually is happening. If it’s controlled with software, it can be manipulated, for good or evil.

Another tactic to track you is RFID chips embedded tires from Roadside Monitors
