Why do GPS systems in cars have a screen?

With all the voice control systems and turn by turn directions, can’t it just tell you what to do? You should be looking at the road, not LCD screen.

People need the feedback that a visual system provides, although you are right in that the GPS should not be a distraction. They will eventually have GPS units that project onto the window the same way a Heads up Display (HUD) in an airplane works.

Here is an idea, build a bridge and get over it!
Or get a chainsaw and cut out the LCD Screen!

The TomTom’s have a safety mode which turns off the screen above a certain speed so you only have the voice. For a while, I tried using AT&T’s navigator through my bluetooth headset. The TomTom was better.

Because you need to enter stuff, and screens, even touch screens, are cheaper and more reliable than voice recognition.
